Gellara

Gellara, Afghanistan’s First Women’s Magazine is breaking taboos: Brave Muslim women talk about fashion, lifestyle and modern life!
Gellara is Afghanistan's pioneering women's lifestyle and fashion magazine, launched in May 2017 by a collective of young Afghan women led by editor-in-chief Fatana Hassanzada. The magazine was conceived as a response to the predominantly negative portrayals of Afghan women in the media, aiming instead to showcase diverse aspects of women's lives, including fashion, health, relationships, and personal empowerment .
Gellara draws inspiration from international publications like Vogue and Allure, offering content that resonates with educated Afghan women. Its inaugural issue featured Canadian-Afghan singer Mozhdah Jamalzadah on the cover, notably without a hijab, challenging societal norms in a country where such displays are rare and often controversial . The magazine covers a wide array of topics, including fashion, beauty, yoga, breast cancer awareness, and even dating apps like Tinder, which are considered taboo subjects in Afghan society.
